240 Pounds Forced Him to Rethink Work, Family and Health with Jeremie Bacon - 133
Jeremie Bacon knows what it feels like to build a career while watching his health move in the wrong direction.
When he started working at Goldman Sachs, he was 220 pounds and lean. Three years later, he was 240 pounds, stressed, out of shape, and preparing to start his first software company. His wife finally called him out, and that conversation pushed him to change course.
Jeremie eventually dropped more than 60 pounds and became a competitive triathlete while building a company and raising a young family. That experience changed how he viewed stress, health, success, and personal responsibility.
Today, Jeremie has built, bought, and sold multiple software companies. He works as a venture capital investor, teaches entrepreneurship and investing at the University of Chicago, and continues to evaluate how driven people allocate their time.
His framework centers around four buckets:
**Family. Work. Civic. Self.**
Each bucket matters, but they will rarely receive equal attention at the same time. The real work comes from making intentional decisions about where your time goes and understanding what you may be sacrificing in the process.
Jeremie also shares a conversation with a billionaire who admitted that he chose work and self over family and civic responsibility. By the time he understood the cost, his children were adults with families of their own.
That story raises a hard question every driven man needs to answer:
**What are you giving up to get what you think you want?**
