Episode 56 of Driven For Health is a live Call To Rise coaching call. One of the men Coach Brian coached goes through the training he is running, the food he preps, and the sleep he protects. Listen to Episode 56 for the full call.

What a Live Coaching Call Sounds Like

Most episodes of this show are Coach Brian teaching. This one is Coach Brian working.

The call opens on a line that tells you everything about the man on the other end of it. He has no plan to lose to anyone in the room. He wants first place and he wants the parking space that comes with it.

That fire is the raw material. The call is about what he does with it on a Tuesday when nobody is watching.

Nothing here is theory. It is a man who is already lifting, already eating well, and already ahead of the pack, being asked what he is going to hold and what he is going to sharpen next.

The Training: a 5x8 Rep Scheme and Hard Cardio

His strength work runs on a 5x8 protocol. Five sets of eight reps on the main movement.

Eight reps is heavy enough to build and light enough to repeat. Five sets give him the total work he needs without a two hour session. A man over 40 who lifts this way gets stronger without wrecking his week.

That strength block is balanced with hard cardio rather than replaced by it. He was training for a ruck marathon while the call happened.

The number that tells the story is 90. He was leading a base-wide challenge with 90 miles logged in the first two weeks of it.

Nobody logs 90 miles in two weeks by feeling motivated. He logged them because the miles were on the calendar and he treated the calendar as the boss.

Simple Food Beats Clever Food

His nutrition is not complicated and that is the point.

He preps his meals. He controls his portions. He eats for volume, which means big plates of food that hold him to the next meal instead of small plates that leave him hunting at nine at night.

Two things happen when a man eats this way.

The first is that temptation stops being a daily fight. Food that is already cooked and already portioned wins by default at six o'clock, because the alternative takes effort and the prepped meal takes none.

The second is that decision fatigue drops. A man who runs a business or a team spends his whole day deciding. Asking that same brain to also invent dinner at the end of it is where good plans die.

The result on this call was plain. His clothes started to feel huge on him and the fat loss kept going.

Creatine and the Case for Boring Supplements

Creatine came up as a supplement he takes consistently, and consistency is the whole reason it works.

He reported gains in the gym and better focus outside it. Creatine is one of the few supplements a man over 40 can take every day for years without drama.

He did not name a dose on this call, so no dose is stated here. Take the principle instead. Pick the short list of supplements that have real support behind them, then take them daily rather than when it occurs to you.

Sleep Is the Free Drug

Sleep got the strongest language on the call. He treats 7 to 8 hours as the free drug it is.

Here is what changed for him once sleep became a rule rather than a leftover.

He pushes through soreness better. Recovery is where a lifting plan turns into strength, and a man who trains hard on five hours of sleep is paying for a program he never receives.

He handles stress better. The same day feels different on 8 hours than it does on 5.

He gets stronger. The training did not change. The recovery around it did.

This is the cheapest performance gain available to a man over 40 and it is the one most of them trade away first.

The Word for the Year

He picks one word for the year. His word is Intent.

That word is doing real work. It is the thing he checks himself against when a choice comes up that his goal would not choose.

The example on the call was a cookie. An 810 calorie cookie, sitting there, entirely available to him.

He did not white knuckle it. He ran it through the accountability system he had already built, and the system answered for him.

That is the useful part of a word for the year. It is not a motivational poster. It is a filter that makes a decision before the decision gets hard.

Under the word sits his Why. He knows why he is doing this, which is what keeps the answer stable when the cookie is right there and nobody would ever know.

What He Is Not Doing

He is not chasing a new program. He is running one plan and holding it until he hits his goal weight. After that the playbook changes on purpose, not out of boredom.

He is not restricting his way through this. He eats for volume. Big plates, better choices.

He is not treating sleep as optional. It is the first thing he protects, not the last.

He is not relying on his own resolve at the moment of temptation. He built a system and let the system answer.

He is not training in one direction. Strength and cardio both have a place on his week.

Five Things You Can Run This Week

  1. Put your lifts on a 5x8 scheme for the next four weeks and keep the load honest.
  2. Prep two meals ahead so the six o'clock decision is already made.
  3. Build every plate for volume. Protein first, then vegetables, then the starch.
  4. Set a sleep window of 7 to 8 hours and hold it like a meeting you cannot move.
  5. Pick one word for the year and use it as the filter on the next hard choice.

Coach Brian Put His Own Name on Something Too

The other half of this call was Coach Brian committing to the Akron Marathon with his son.

He also talked through a running shoe saga that anyone who has trained for distance will recognize.

It matters for one reason. A coach who asks men to put something on the calendar and be held to it should have something on his own calendar that he can be held to.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens on a live coaching call with Coach Brian Parana?

The coach and the client work the plan out loud. On episode 56 they covered the lifting scheme, the meal prep, the supplements, the sleep window, and the reason behind all of it. Nothing on the call was scripted teaching.

What is a 5x8 rep scheme?

A 5x8 scheme means five sets of eight reps on a movement. Eight reps is heavy enough to build strength and light enough to repeat, and five sets deliver the total work without a two hour session. It suits a man over 40 who wants to get stronger without wrecking his week.

How much sleep should a man over 40 get to recover from training?

The man on episode 56 holds 7 to 8 hours and calls it the free drug. He reported better recovery from soreness, better handling of stress, and more strength with no change to the training itself.

Does meal prep help with fat loss?

Prepped and portioned food removes the six o'clock decision, so temptation stops being a daily fight. It also cuts decision fatigue for a man who spends his whole workday deciding. On episode 56 the result was clothes that started to feel huge and fat loss that kept going.

What does eating for volume mean?

Eating for volume means building big plates around protein and vegetables so the meal holds you until the next one. It is the opposite of small portions that leave you hunting for food late at night.

Is creatine worth taking for men over 40?

On episode 56 creatine came up as a daily supplement tied to gains in the gym and better focus outside it. Consistency is what makes it work. No dose was named on the call, so none is stated here.

How do you say no to an 810 calorie cookie?

The man on episode 56 did not rely on his own resolve in the moment. He ran the choice through an accountability system he had already built, and he uses one word for the year as a filter on hard choices. His word is Intent.
