Choose Your Hard: Inside a Live Coaching Call for Men Over 40
Coach Brian opens this round table by handing every man the same choice. You are carrying a hard either way, so pick the one that pays you back. Episode 88 is the live session from inside The Call To Rise, covering the language men use about their constraints and the food system that works with no stove and no fridge.
Every man on this call had something hard in front of him. Coach Brian Parana made them pick which hard they were going to carry. Listen to Episode 88 for the full session.
This is a live round table from inside The Call To Rise. Coach Brian is a coach and not a doctor. Nothing here is medical advice.
You Are Carrying a Hard Either Way
Goal setting felt heavy to the men on this call. Coach Brian did not argue with that. He gave them a choice instead.
"You choose your hard. Is it the hard of your prior life, or the hard of the future life?"
Both options cost you. One of them pays you back.
He put his own on the table first. He has a business to keep afloat and four kids to provide for. He wants enough built up to one day coach because he wants to rather than because he has to. He named the newer worry too, which is whether AI and GLP-1 drugs leave anybody wanting a coach next year.
Then he named the four-letter word sitting on the better side of the choice. Hope. Hope that the body changes and that your confidence and your energy come along behind it.
His ask for the week was small. Acknowledge the feeling and take a pause. Then send him a message that says life is hard right now, and he answers it.
The Word He Made One Man Drop
One man kept describing himself as restricted. Coach Brian agreed the restriction was real, then turned it over.
"Be grateful for that sense of restriction, because it's allowing you to get to the next step."
The instruction was direct. Whenever the word restricted lands in your head, flip it and list what you do have access to. The restriction becomes the proof that you can handle what your life is handing you.
He built the case on himself. His podcast download numbers move without his permission. He has no control over that. The recording and the content and the storytelling belong to him, so those are the inputs he works on.
He also read the group a line from the fighter pilot episode he had recorded, which is Episode 85. "What if I told you that your kids are 80% likely to become the adult that you are now, not the adult that you want them to be?" He let it sit there. The man your kids copy is the man you are today.
Feeding Yourself With No Kitchen and No Fridge
One man in the group cannot cook, heat, or store food where he lives. He buys it, eats it, and finishes it inside a controlled window. That is the whole kitchen.
Coach Brian built him a system for it on the call.
Buy frozen in the morning and eat it in the afternoon. A frozen meal bought early is thawed and edible by four or five o'clock. Time the purchase to the meal instead of hunting for something hot at dinner.
Take your vegetables from the canned and frozen aisle. Same thaw trick. You get good at reading how long a bag takes and when it is ready to eat.
Keep a backpack that feeds you. A pouch of tuna. Canned meat. Nuts for the day a client emergency runs straight through your meal window. An apple needs no refrigeration at all.
Watch the ready-to-eat counter. The salmon and asparagus behind the glass are convenient and heavily salted. They season everything, so treat that counter as an option rather than a habit.
Learn to shop the sale. Read the weekly ad and use the coupons. Look at it every week and the patterns become obvious. You learn what is expensive and what is not, and the grocery run beats leaning on a burrito bowl every day.
Rank Your Food Options Before You Are Hungry
Coach Brian gave the same homework twice on this call, and it takes ten minutes.
Open the maps app on your phone. List every food option near you in three groups from closest to farthest. Fast food. Fast casual. Grocery stores.
That list is the menu you are working from whether you write it down or not. Get it on paper and it turns into a plan you can build meals against instead of whatever sits closest once the hunger hits.
Coach Brian also pushed the group to use the food already included where they live and work. Free food is part of the budget. Some of it is pizza and hot dogs, and there is still usually something on the table worth taking.
What a Good Travel Week Looks Like
Men in this group live on the road. Coach Brian's measure for a trip is one question.
Did you make better choices than the last time you left?
If the answer is yes, the direction is right. That is the entire scorecard for a travel week.
His advice on training away from home surprises people. If travel comes up now and then, skip the hotel gym. Pack walking shoes and get your steps instead. Working out enough at home across the year covers you.
He follows his own rule. He packs swim trunks and a swim shirt so he can rinse them in the sink and skip the laundry problem. In Kenya two summers ago he found a gym and used it two or three times across a two-week trip. In Egypt there were none, so he walked and toured temples and called it done.
The Basics Are the Whole Program
Onboarding hands a man a lot at once. Coach Brian narrowed it down for the newer guys.
Three videos carry the food education. The first call-prep video. Meat and potatoes, the ins and outs of flexible dieting. The six must-know food rules. Watch each one twice and take real notes.
Then the daily scorecard gets short. Did I drink enough water. Did I manage my calories today.
Mike shows what that looks like under pressure. He lost his mother two or three weeks before this call and started a new job in the same stretch. Coach Brian did not hand him a plan to perfect. He told him to take pictures of his food and practice food balance. Mike was down four or five pounds at about the two-week mark.
The men checking every box in the app were the ones Coach Brian pointed to. His words for it were plain. That is what makes people successful.
The Football Fumble
Martin worked with Coach Brian two or three years ago and got down 60 to 70 pounds. He regained a chunk of it by taking his eye off the ball.
Coach Brian found the pattern on a football weekend in San Diego a couple of years back. Every social situation was a fumble. Martin would run the ball to the ten-yard line, drop it, and watch the other team run it back the other way. Then he started over.
What makes the story useful is that a man tends to fumble in the same spot every time. Find your spot and you know where the coaching has to go. Coach Brian sent Martin football fumble clips for weeks until it stuck.
That is also why the basics come back around. The plan that got Martin down 60 pounds still works. It stopped when he stopped.
Coach Brian Named His Own Overwhelm
Halfway through the call he held up his phone to the group. Two podcast episodes had generated more than ten clips each. Twenty clips sitting there. Thirty images and videos of his face behind them.
Posting all of it with a decent caption would eat two or three hours, even with AI helping. So it sits on his phone.
He said it out loud on a coaching call because it makes the point better than a lecture would. Overwhelm arrives with a full calendar no matter how well a man built the life around it. He reads a novel's worth of material a day and he still hits the wall.
The men on that call are running businesses and flying planes and managing other people's crises. Coach Brian goes first with his own so nobody has to pretend.
Common Mistakes on This Call
Calling a constraint a life sentence. Restriction is a season and a next step, and the word you use for it changes what you do next.
Waiting for the ideal setup. No fridge and no stove is a plan problem, not a reason to postpone the plan.
Buying every meal out. Convenience food adds up fast, and the grocery store is a learnable skill.
Grading a trip against perfect. The comparison that counts is the last trip you took.
Forcing a workout into a travel day. Walking shoes and a step count beat a rushed hotel session you resent.
Dropping the basics when life gets heavy. A death in the family and a new job are exactly when photos of your food matter most.
Who This Is For
This is for the man over 40 whose schedule belongs to other people. He travels for work or lives somewhere without a real kitchen. He knows what he should be eating and cannot see how it fits.
He does not need a stricter plan. He needs a food system that survives his actual week and a coach who notices when he goes quiet.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does choose your hard mean?
Coach Brian frames it as a choice between the hard of the life you have been living and the hard of the life you want. Both cost you something and only one of them pays you back. He names his own on this call so the men hear that nobody gets a version without weight on it.
How do you eat well when you cannot cook or store food?
Buy a frozen meal in the morning and eat it around four or five o'clock once it has thawed. Take your vegetables from the canned and frozen aisle and learn the timing of when each one is ready. Keep a backpack stocked with a pouch of tuna, canned meat, nuts and an apple.
What portable foods work with no refrigerator?
A pouch of tuna and canned meat give you protein that keeps at room temperature. Nuts cover the day an emergency runs through your meal window. An apple travels for hours and needs no refrigeration at all.
How do you spend less on food when you buy every meal out?
Read the weekly grocery ad and use the coupons. Look at it every week and the patterns become obvious, so you learn what is expensive and what is not. Leaning on a burrito bowl every day adds up faster than a grocery run does.
Should you work out while traveling?
If travel comes up now and then, Coach Brian says skip the hotel gym and pack walking shoes instead. Get your steps and let the training you do at home carry the year. If you are on the road constantly, then keeping a workout in the routine makes sense.
How do you know if a travel week went well?
Coach Brian uses one question. Did you make better choices than the last time you left? A yes means the direction is right, and that is the whole scorecard for a week away.
What should you focus on when life gets heavy mid-program?
Go back to the basics and drop everything else. Mike lost his mother and started a new job in the same stretch, and Coach Brian had him take pictures of his food and practice food balance rather than perfect a plan. He was down four or five pounds at about the two-week mark.
