What To Order At CAVA For Fat Loss
CAVA hands you a base, a protein and a long row of additions. Coach Brian walks through what each one costs you and where the calories hide. You get two exact orders you can say word for word at the counter.
Two men order at the same CAVA counter. One walks out with 1,040 calories and the other walks out with 580. This episode covers the three decisions that separate them.
Two Bowls And 460 Calories Between Them
CAVA lists its pomegranate glazed salmon bowl at 1,040 calories with 36 grams of protein. The Greek salad bowl comes in at 580 calories with 37 grams of protein.
Same protein. 460 fewer calories.
Both names sound healthy. Both come from a place that reads as healthy. That is what makes the gap easy to miss.
You Are In The Driver's Seat Here
CAVA is a build your own restaurant. You pick a base. You pick a protein. You add on from there.
Nobody adds up every scoop while moving down the line. That is normal. I do not run the math in my head at Chipotle either.
You do not need the math. You need to know which choices add calories and which ones multiply them.
Cheese multiplies. Guacamole multiplies. Rice multiplies. Tomatoes and peppers add. Greens are close to nothing.
One more thing about build your own counters. Two orders of the same food can land 100 to 200 calories apart depending on how heavy the server's hand is.
Where CAVA Came From
CAVA opened in 2006 as a full-service Mediterranean restaurant. Customers raved about the dips and spreads enough that CAVA started selling them in grocery stores. The fast casual format arrived in 2011.
By 2026 the chain has grown to 476 restaurants.
CAVA claims 17 billion possible ingredient combinations across its bowls and pitas. That number comes from CAVA's own marketing and Instagram. I have no idea how they got there.
When CAVA filed to go public in 2023 the company said about 80 percent of guests build their own meal. That is the appeal of the place.
Decision One: Your Base
Supergreens runs about 35 calories with 3 grams of protein and 4 grams of fiber. That is the lightest start on the board.
CAVA also offers arugula, baby spinach and romaine. Most lettuces run 10 to 20 calories per cup. Fill space with them and you keep room for the heavier items later.
Saffron basmati rice runs almost 300 calories with 5 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber. Brown rice runs roughly 300 calories with 7 grams of protein and 5 grams of fiber. Pick whichever one tastes better to you.
Black lentils are the one to know. They run 270 calories with 18 grams of protein and 15 grams of fiber.
Rice and black lentils sit close on calories. The lentils win on everything else.
Rice is still a good choice. It comes down to how much you get. Order it light if you want it.
If you trained today then rice earns its place. If you did not then lead with greens and put heavier protein on top.
You can also do greens with black lentils. That gets you the protein and the fiber with the bulk of the greens underneath.
Decision Two: Your Protein
The first hack is letting your base do some of the work.
Black lentils bring 18 grams before you choose a meat. Add grilled steak at 23 grams and you are at 41. Add grilled chicken at 28 grams and you are at 46.
That lands inside the 40 to 50 grams of protein I suggest for most men at most meals. Plant protein counts. All of this is before hummus or feta.
Grilled steak runs about 170 calories with 23 grams of protein. Grilled chicken runs about 250 calories with 28 grams of protein.
Chicken carries about 80 more calories for about 5 more grams of protein. Steak costs you fewer calories. Chicken gives you a little more protein. Both build a good meal.
Falafel is the plant based option at about 350 calories with 6 grams of protein. It sits in the protein row on the menu board and it behaves like a carbohydrate. Pair it with black lentils if you want the vegetarian bowl to hit a real protein number.
Decision Three: Your Additions
This is where bowls get away from people.
Crazy feta is one of CAVA's signatures. It is whipped feta blended with jalapeno, onion and olive oil. It lists at 70 calories with 4 grams of protein. That is a strong add for what it costs you.
Hummus runs about 35 calories per tablespoon.
White sweet potatoes first appeared in 2021. CAVA pulled them and fans kept asking for them back. They returned in a 2026 menu relaunch. Order them if you like them and count them.
The yogurt dill dressing runs 30 calories. The garlic dressing runs 180.
Dill and garlic carry no calories on their own. The difference is the base underneath. One is yogurt and the other is oil.
Pita crisps sprinkled on the bowl run 70 calories or more. A separate side of pita chips runs 280.
A potato chip runs about 10 calories. A tortilla chip runs about 15. A pita chip lands in that same range and a side of them multiplies fast.
The classic lemonade runs 250 to 300 calories with 66 grams of sugar. That is about a can and a half of Coke.
Stack the salmon bowl with a side of pita chips and a lemonade and you clear 1,500 calories in one sitting. It goes down easy. You do not feel it. Then your next meal comes around on schedule and you eat that too.
The Two Orders
Both orders use the same dip and the same dressing. The base and the protein are what separate them.
Here is the lighter order. A bowl with supergreens, grilled chicken, hummus, avocado, tomato, cucumber, crumbled feta and yogurt dill dressing. That comes in around 500 to 550 calories with 40 grams of protein and about 10 grams of fiber.
Here is the bigger order. A bowl with black lentils, grilled steak, hummus, tomato, Persian cucumber, fiery broccoli, sumac cabbage slaw, crumbled feta and yogurt dill dressing. That comes in around 650 calories with 50 grams of protein and 19 grams of fiber.
The lighter order fits inside a normal day without any planning around it. The bigger order covers a real share of your protein and fiber for the day.
Say either one word for word and the decision is already made before you reach the counter.
If You Do Not Want To Build Anything
The Greek salad bowl is already on the menu at under 600 calories with 36 to 37 grams of protein. Order it as is and walk out the door.
That is the whole play for a day when you do not want to think about it.
What Sodium Does To The Scale
Restaurant meals run high in sodium and CAVA is no exception. That raises water retention and scale weight. It also raises how much water you need to drink.
A jump on the scale the morning after a bowl like this is water. Do not read it as fat.
