The Simple 2-Part System for Weight Loss in Men Over 40

The Simple 2-Part System for Weight Loss in Men Over 40

A new man joined this round table on his second day in the program, and the group spent the hour telling him what they wish they had known in week one. Their answers landed on two daily numbers and a short list of habits that make both easy to hit. Episode 78 is that call.

Two numbers carry most of the fat loss for men over 40. Walk 10,000 steps or more. Eat 1,800 calories or less. Coach Brian Parana teaches that pair on this live Call To Rise round table, and the men on the call show what it looks like on an ordinary weekday.

This is a live round table from The Call To Rise. Coach Brian is a coach and not a doctor. Nothing here is medical advice.

Why Two Numbers Beat Another Plan

Most men over 40 arrive with a stack of rules they cannot hold for a week. A fasting window. A carb cut. A macro split copied off a forum. One travel week ends all of it.

Coach Brian runs the opposite setup. A man gets two numbers to hit each day and everything else gets built around them. Most guys get results at 10,000 steps or more and 1,800 calories or less, and the pattern repeats from man to man. Neither number asks you to learn a new skill.

Part One: Walk 10,000 Steps or More

Steps are the first input men over 40 skip, because a step does not feel like training.

Movement is what buys you room at the table. The men on this call who move the most also get to eat the most.

One man on the call gets close to 17,000 steps on an ordinary day and rucks and lifts on top of that. His calorie number goes up rather than down.

A man who works from home has to put the movement somewhere on purpose. The call covers a man with an elliptical in his basement who believed every session had to end in a puddle of sweat. The correction was to get on it and move for 10 minutes with no sweat at all. He started using it. A walking pad under a standing desk does the same job.

Part Two: Eat 1,800 Calories or Less

1,800 is the number most men on this call work from. It stops being a hunger problem once the food is picked well.

Treat the number as a budget for the day. You have a set amount to spend and you decide where it goes. Spend it on food that keeps you full.

That budget is also what makes a party workable. If the event lands at night, load the daytime with fiber and food that holds you. Then eat when you get there. One man on the call kept losing weight through Thanksgiving and Christmas doing exactly that.

The Days Both Numbers Move

The numbers move when the training load moves. On a long ruck day one man on the call eats 3,500 calories and the weight still comes down. A man running long can carry 3,000 some calories that day. Coach Brian adjusts around the work rather than holding every man at one number forever.

The mistake runs the other direction more often. One man ran half a marathon, burned 2,000 plus calories before noon, and had eaten 300 calories. He was empty by the afternoon. Underfueling a big day is its own problem.

The Simple Six Sits Under the Calorie Number

Coach Brian's nutrition order, in this order every time:

  1. Hit your calorie goal
  2. Eat enough protein
  3. Fill up on fiber
  4. Limit your fat
  5. Be conscious of carbs
  6. Eliminate simple sugar

The sequence is what makes it usable. Check the fiber box for the day and still have carbs left, and a bowl of cereal fits fine.

Build the Plate in This Order

Four steps, and the order does the work:

  1. Vegetables first
  2. Protein second
  3. Starchy carbs third
  4. A little fat last

One man on the call lost 10 pounds in his first week on that alone. Volume goes on the plate before density, so you are full before the calorie-heavy part of the meal.

Meal Prep Is What Makes 1,800 Automatic

Cooking once for the week keeps the calorie number from becoming a daily decision. One man on the call cooks on the weekend and holds the week in deli containers in his freezer. He shreds a whole lemon pepper turkey so there is protein ready on a day he does not cook.

The planning collapses once the food already exists. He went from hours of planning and cooking to about 10 minutes to lay out a day of meals and know the calories going in.

Prep is not required to hit the number. Bags of frozen vegetables into an air fryer cover the same ground. So does finding recipes you want to eat, and one man on the call got into cooking meals near 400 calories a serving with 30 grams of protein and 15 grams of carbs.

Small Plates and a Photo of Every Meal

Two habits from this call do more than any food rule.

Use a small plate. A small serving on a small plate makes you decide a second time before you go back, and that pause is where the extra calories get cut.

Photograph everything you eat and send it to someone. A man who knows the picture is going to his coach asks whether the food is worth the calories first.

Slow the Fork Down

Your body needs around 20 minutes to register what you ate. Plenty of men finish a meal in 10.

Put the fork down after every bite. Eat without the phone and without the TV. One man on the call planned to eat with his left hand to force the pace. Being the last man finished at the table is a good target. Leaving food behind takes practice for men raised to clear the plate.

What This Looks Like After 100 Days

One man on the call started at 249 and weighed 214 at his last weigh in, and he has been at it since November. Another man finished his first 100 days 30 pounds down, stayed on for a second block, and has about 20 pounds left to his goal weight while he trains for a marathon.

Neither man rebuilt his life to get there. Both hit two numbers most days.

Common Mistakes

Under-eating on a big training day. A long run or a long ruck earns more food, and skipping that food ruins the next two days.

Waiting until you are famished. A man who last ate at noon and lifts at 7 is running on nothing by the second set.

Treating pasta as the villain. Any noodle carries the same calories and carbs for the same portion. Chickpea and lentil versions bring more fiber and protein with them. Portion size is the lever.

Picking a plan you cannot repeat next week. If it will not survive a work trip, it is not your system.

Start Here This Week

  1. Count your steps for three days and change nothing else.
  2. Add walking until you clear 10,000 on most days.
  3. Track your food for one week and find out what you eat in a normal week.
  4. Build every plate in this order. Vegetables, protein, starch, then fat.
  5. Put the fork down after every bite and be the last one finished.
  6. Send a photo of every meal to someone who will look at it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the simple 2-part system for weight loss in men over 40?

It is two daily numbers. Walk 10,000 steps or more and eat 1,800 calories or less. Coach Brian teaches that most men get results on those two inputs held most days, and the result repeats from man to man because nothing about it depends on a new skill.

How many steps a day should a man over 40 walk to lose weight?

Aim for 10,000 or more. Steps are what buy you room at the table, so the men who move most also get to eat most. One man on this call gets close to 17,000 steps on an ordinary day and rucks and lifts on top of that, so his calorie number goes up rather than down.

How many calories should a man over 40 eat to lose weight?

Most men on this call work from 1,800 calories or less, paired with 10,000 steps or more. Treat the number as a budget for the day and decide where to spend it. Long training days move the number up, and one man on the call eats 3,500 calories on a long ruck day and still loses weight.

What is the Simple Six?

The Simple Six is Coach Brian's nutrition order. Hit your calorie goal, eat enough protein, fill up on fiber, limit your fat, be conscious of carbs, and eliminate simple sugar. The order is what makes it usable, because a food that fits what is left in your day is a good choice regardless of its reputation.

What order should you build your plate in for fat loss?

Vegetables first, protein second, starchy carbs third, and a little fat last. Volume goes on the plate before density, so you are already full by the time you reach the calorie-heavy part of the meal. One man on this call lost 10 pounds in his first week on that alone.

Do you have to meal prep to lose weight after 40?

No. Prep makes the calorie number automatic, and one man on this call cooks once on the weekend and holds the week in deli containers in his freezer. Bags of frozen vegetables into an air fryer get a man to the same place without a weekend of cooking.

How do you eat at a party or a holiday and still lose weight?

Go in with a plan and treat your calories as a budget. Load the daytime with fiber and food that holds you, use a small plate at the event, and photograph what you eat so you decide whether each item is worth the calories. One man on this call kept losing weight through Thanksgiving and Christmas doing that.
