The Gas Station Test That Sorts Protein From Fat

The Gas Station Test That Sorts Protein From Fat

A gas station is the one stop in this series with no menu board and no posted calorie count. Coach Brian walks the shelves in episode 156 and sorts them with a single test you can run in five seconds. He then builds four meals from what almost any station carries.

You can clear 700 calories at a gas station without touching the chips or the candy. A giant Slim Jim, a single serve bag of peanuts and a large sugary drink get you there, and they hand back 19 grams of protein for it. This episode covers how to read a gas station shelf and build something that holds you over.

A Gas Station Has No Menu Board

Every other stop in this series gives you a menu and a posted calorie count. A gas station gives you shelves. The information is on the back of each package and nowhere else.

That changes the skill you need. You are not picking a better item off a list. You are sorting a room full of packages into food that works and food that does not.

Coach Brian has driven through all 50 states and been into gas stations in most of them. The stop itself is not the problem. Walking in without a plan is what turns a fuel stop into a full meal of calories.

Make One Decision Before You Pick Anything Up

Decide what the stop is for before you touch a package.

Are you holding yourself over until a real meal? Or is this the meal? Those two answers need different food and different amounts of it.

A hold-over needs a couple of hundred calories and enough protein to keep you steady for two or three hours. A meal replacement needs more food and 30 to 40 grams of protein to carry you four or five hours.

One more case worth naming. If you are driving around your own town, a gas station is not your lunch. That is a separate conversation about how the week is built.

The Meat Stick Test

Two meat snacks sit next to each other and look like the same decision. They are not.

An original giant Slim Jim runs about 130 calories with 6 grams of protein. Protein carries 4 calories per gram, so that is 24 calories of protein out of 130. The rest is fat. A beef stick is a fat source that happens to contain protein.

A one ounce serving of Jack Link's original beef jerky runs about 80 calories with 10 grams of protein. That is 40 calories of protein out of 80. Half the package is protein.

Same shelf. Same few dollars. One of them does the job you bought it for.

This is the test that sorts the whole store. Look for close to 10 grams of protein per 100 calories when protein is the reason you are buying something. Jack Link's clears it. The Slim Jim is not close.

One more habit worth building on meat sticks. Read the ingredients panel and the carbohydrate line. Jerky is often sweetened for flavor, which is why carbs turn up in a product that started as beef. The meats listed can include mechanically separated poultry, which is a regulated and permitted ingredient that is not the same thing as a whole cut of beef.

The Rest Of The Store Under The Same Test

The roller grill. Those items generally land between 200 and 300 calories with 10 to 15 grams of protein and 15 to 20 grams of fat. Each one carries roughly 500 to 600 milligrams of sodium. That fails the protein test and you have no idea how long it has been turning. Coach Brian passes on these.

Peanuts. A 1.75 ounce single serve pack of Planters salted peanuts is about 290 calories with 13 grams of protein and 25 grams of fat. Nuts are a fat source with some protein attached. They are a reasonable choice when you want one, and they will not hold you over on their own.

Here is the comparison that lands. That small bag carries more than half the calories of a four piece hot case chicken tender box and about a fifth of the protein. Pair the peanuts with an apple or a banana if you want them to stretch. The fruit adds fiber and about another hundred calories.

Potato chips. Roughly 10 to 12 calories per chip, and nobody eats ten chips. A fun size bag lands around 140 to 150 calories. Chips are thin slices of potato cooked in oil, and they are everywhere in a gas station.

Slushies and large sweetened drinks. Sugar and flavoring with no nutrition attached. A large one can add hundreds of calories. The sugar rush is also a myth. Pooled trial evidence finds no mood lift from a carbohydrate hit at any point afterward, and it finds more fatigue and less alertness inside the first hour. That is the opposite of what a long drive needs.

Protein bars. A Quest chocolate chip cookie dough bar comes in around 190 calories with 21 grams of protein, 9 grams of fat and 25 grams of carbs. That is a balanced bar and one of the highest protein numbers among the shelf stable options. It is more processed than whole food and it is still a legitimate pick when nothing else is around.

The trap is the shelf next to it. Plenty of bars print PROTEIN in giant letters and carry 8 to 15 grams inside. Some lean on soy and some are closer to a candy bar with a health label. Turn the package over.

Hard boiled eggs. A two pack runs about 120 calories with 11 grams of protein and 8 grams of fat. This is the best whole food snack in the building and the item the Eating On-The-Go Guide names first. The ingredient list is one word.

The hot case. Some stations cook real food, and a fried chicken tender box is the strongest protein play in the store when they do. Read the posted nutrition data before you commit, because portion sizes and recipes vary by chain. Skip the potato wedges and the fries that come with it.

Four Meals You Can Build

The quick snack. Hard boiled eggs and a piece of fruit. Around 200 to 250 calories, and it holds you two or three hours.

The full meal from the cooler. A protein shake plus the eggs plus a piece of fruit. That lands a little under 400 calories with about 41 grams of protein. Add the bag of peanuts if you need a bigger meal, and you are over 500 calories with real food behind it.

The no cooler backup. A Quest bar plus a serving of Jack Link's plus a piece of fruit. That is 350 to 400 calories with 31 to 35 grams of protein. Sodium runs higher on this one.

The hot case meal. A chicken tender box paired with a piece of fruit. Skip the fries and the chips and any sugary drink alongside it, or the stop clears a thousand calories without much effort.

A Word On The Sodium

Gas station food is salty by design. A single roller grill item can carry 500 to 600 milligrams and a hot case box can clear 1,200.

The general guideline for adults is under 2,300 milligrams a day. Men managing high blood pressure or diabetes or a kidney or heart condition should sit well below that. A large share of the men Coach Brian coaches carry at least one of those conditions, and one hot case meal can put them most of the way through a day.

Ryan Did This From The Road

Ryan is a client who lost 45 pounds and has kept it off while traveling regularly for work. His schedule is full and he has two young kids at home. He was making food decisions between meetings and airports and long stretches on the road.

He used the strategies in the Eating On-The-Go Guide, and he and Coach Brian would game plan the trips ahead of time so he had something to follow. You can hear his full story on episode 86.

Five Rules For Any Gas Station

One. Check the serving count before you compare labels. A protein cookie is often two servings in one wrapper, which doubles every number on the panel. Episode 74 covers how to read a nutrition label properly.

Two. Look for close to 10 grams of protein per 100 calories. This is the fastest sort in the store. Hold the fat down while you are at it, and a package that clears the protein bar rarely has room for much fat anyway.

Three. Use nuts as a fat source. They will hold you over and they multiply calories quickly if you are not paying attention.

Four. Start at the cooler. That is where the eggs and the shakes and the fruit live. Not the candy aisle. Not the front counter. Not the slushy machine.

Five. Drink water or a zero calorie beverage. Most sugary drinks run two to three hundred calories of pure sugar. They also leave you more tired and less alert inside the hour, which is the last thing you want behind the wheel.

The One Thing To Take With You

Walk in with a plan. Decide whether the stop is a hold-over or a meal. Then pick against that decision instead of against whatever is loudest on the shelf. That is what keeps a BOGO sticker from rewriting your day.

How much protein should a gas station snack have?

Look for close to 10 grams of protein per 100 calories when protein is the reason you are buying the item. A snack that holds you over needs 10 to 15 grams, and a meal replacement needs 30 to 40 grams.
