Lab research on eccentric overload provides a version of support for this idea. Researchers use machines that apply more resistance on the lowering phase than on the lifting phase. That setup allows heavier eccentric loading than standard gym equipment allows.
A barbell bench press does not work that way. You cannot safely lower a weight you cannot press back up. If you lower too much and get stuck, you need a spotter or a safety rack. The lab condition does not map to a standard commercial gym.
A study that slowed the eccentric phase to four seconds per rep showed that participants lifted less weight and completed less total work as a result. Lower total volume means a weaker growth signal.
Slow-rep training has been tested in multiple studies. Normal controlled tempo beats it for strength and size in nearly every comparison. One gym chain built its entire model on this concept. It did not last.
Why Force Matters More Than Duration
The concept that better explains muscle growth is impulse. Impulse equals force multiplied by time. The magnitude of tension matters more than how long a rep takes.
Walking creates sustained time under tension in the legs. It does not produce meaningful quad growth. Sprinting and hill repeats generate high force in a short window. They grow the quads and calves. The difference is force, not duration.
Brian uses a bicep curl comparison to illustrate this. Curling 25 pounds on each side and resisting gravity on the way down is one form of eccentric loading. Having a training partner pull down on an empty bar while you resist that force produces far more tension on the muscle. The second version creates more stimulus even at a similar time under tension.
Heavy loads also set their own pace naturally. A near-maximal squat or deadlift moves slowly because the load is close to the lifter's limit. The bar speed slows on its own. The load controls the concentric. The lifter controls the descent. No special tempo prescription is needed for that.
Studies show heavier loads moved at natural controlled speeds create more impulse and produce better strength and size results than lighter loads dragged out slowly.
Common Tempo Mistakes
Slowing the eccentric until volume drops. When each rep takes six or eight seconds instead of two or three, fatigue builds before the lifter completes enough productive work. Load drops and total volume shrinks. The growth stimulus follows volume down.
Losing force on the concentric. Letting momentum move the weight on the press or the pull or the curl removes the muscle from the work. The bar moves but the stimulus weakens.
Ignoring tempo on technical movements. Lateral raises and rows and curls lose form under fatigue faster than compound lifts do. Swinging the weight up and letting it fall removes a significant portion of the working stimulus from the set.
What to Do in Practice
Control the lowering phase on every rep. A two-to-three count on the eccentric keeps tension on the muscle and reduces injury risk. Gravity does not need to assist.
Drive the concentric with deliberate force and intent. The press or the pull should feel purposeful. Good form stays in place and effort goes up.
Keep the rhythm natural. Most experienced lifters use one to three seconds on both the concentric and eccentric phases without tracking a specific number. Brian trains at roughly two seconds up and two seconds down. He targets eight to twelve repetitions and will push to thirteen or fifteen reps when the weight and feel allow.
