25 Real Questions From Men Over 40 About Fat Loss and Training (Part 1)

After 40 you lose 2 to 3 percent of muscle every decade. This happens whether you train or not. Coach Brian built this episode from 25 questions clients send him in the DMs and ask him at the gym.

This episode is Part 1 of a two part AMA. It covers nutrition and fitness. Part 2 lands in episode 119 and covers labs, travel and aging.

Nutrition Questions From Men Over 40

Most men need 150 grams of protein a day at minimum. Many men eat close to 100 grams and wonder why they are starving by 10pm. Brian tells clients to aim for 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight.

Keto and fasting both work at first because they cut calories. They stop working when your family eats something different every night and the diet does not fit your life.

One client treats client dinners like a calorie tax now. He allows one 12 ounce drink instead of the biggest pour on the menu. He counts each bite of bread or appetizers as about 50 calories. He decides before he sits down instead of choosing when he is hungry and tired. He is down 28 pounds and still keeps it off two years later.

Salmon and avocado on one plate looks healthy. Together they can carry 50 grams of fat. That runs about 450 calories in fat alone.

Pizza night does not have to end. One client eats two slices at about 300 to 400 calories and keeps the whole meal under 800 calories. He does this every week for 100 days and still loses 20 pounds or more. Chris shares his full story in episode 117.

Fitness Questions From Men Over 40

You do not need to train every day to see results. Brian coaches clients who train 3 days a week and still see results. Intention matters more than intensity for these clients.

The scale can stay flat for 6 weeks while your body still changes. One pant size down and a lower body fat percentage both count as progress.

Muscle loss after 40 runs 2 to 3 percent per decade. Low protein and fad diets can push that number to 30 or 40 percent of total weight lost. Brian sets a target of 150 to 200 grams of protein paired with heavy strength training.

Training like you are 25 at 47 tends to end in injury. Brian is 43 and feels new aches that show up faster and last longer than they used to. Joints need more warmup and the nervous system needs more rest between hard sessions after 40.

Brian sets a daily target of 10000 steps. Steps help manage blood sugar and add energy without adding training volume. Many clients lose fat and gain energy within the first 2 weeks of walking more.
